How to Use a Cannabis Tincture

There are numerous ways to use cannabis. From well-known methods such as smoking and edibles to lesser-known methods like creams and bath bombs, you have many options to reap the benefits of what cannabis has to offer. One of the easiest ways to use it, however, is a cannabis tincture.

What is a Cannabis Tincture?

It’s simply a cannabis extract. Its production involves placing cannabis into a liquid to pull out the cannabinoids and other medicinal properties of the plant and straining the plant material. Typically, cannabis tinctures are made using an alcohol solution, but glycerin or oil may be used as well.

Once the tincture is made, the liquid is stored in dark bottles and sealed with a dropper cap. The dark color of the bottle helps to keep light out to protect the tincture from damage.

Common Benefits

Cannabis tinctures have several benefits:

  • Tinctures can be used to treat a wide variety of ailments, including pain, inflammation, anxiety, insomnia, seizures, and more
  • Application is easy and discreet
  • You don’t need any special equipment or preparation to use a tincture
  • The dropper allows for precise dosing
  • Cannabis tinctures take effect quickly
  • Stored properly, tinctures have a long shelf-life

Sublingual

One of the most common ways to use a cannabis tincture is sublingually. This method involves placing your dosage under your tongue. The blood vessels under the tongue absorb the cannabis and it’s transported quickly into the bloodstream. It typically takes about 15 minutes to begin feeling the effects. Moreover, it’s one of the quickest ways to achieve a cannabis outcome.

The speed at which a cannabis tincture takes effect when taken sublingually is just one benefit. In addition, this method keeps the cannabis formulation from coming into contact with your stomach acids. Furthermore, allowing for the beneficial properties of the tincture to remain intact and available for your body to use.

Added to Food or Drinks

A cannabis tincture can be added to food, such as a sauce, sorbet, or dressing, or placed in your favorite drink. One of the biggest benefits of this method is that it covers the flavor of the tincture, which some may find unpleasant. It takes a bit longer for you to feel the effects because the tincture needs to be digested first.

Topical

Another way to use tinctures is to apply them topically. After placing a few drops on the affected area and rubbing it in, the cannabis absorbs directly into the skin. Topical application is commonly used by those seeking pain relief. Additionally, cannabis tinctures can be rubbed on the body to alleviate sore muscles, tendonitis, arthritis, and more.

They’re also typically used as topicals to treat different skin conditions. Some individuals use tinctures to treat issues like acne, eczema or psoriasis. While others may incorporate tinctures into their daily face care routine.

Tips for Use

Here are a few tips to help you get the most out of your cannabis tincture:

  • For the fastest results, take your tincture sublingually
  • Store your tincture in a cool, dark, dry location
  • Avoid eating or drinking anything for at least 15 minutes after taking your tincture sublingually
  • Keep the glass dropper clean to avoid contaminating the tincture

Cannabis tinctures are incredibly versatile. They can be used for several ailments and provide many benefits. Tinctures come in a wide array of ratios, giving you plenty of options to choose from. If you’re just getting started with tinctures, start with a low dose and work your way up to help you find the right amount for you.
